See our meaty muffin recipe and baking instructions for further directions.

We suggest that an Omega 3 fatty acid in the form of pure wild Alaskan Sockeye salmon oil be added to the daily diet. The wild salmon oil we suggest and use for our own dogs is gluten free, whole, natural and unrefined, purity and potency certified by the NSF, and certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. The soft gel itself is composed of fish gelatin, glycerin derived from vegetable sources, and purified water, and contains no artificial preservatives, colour, dairy, starch, wheat, yeast, sugar, or soy. WEST COAST CANINE LIFE ® is a whole foods diet.  Our foods are made with only whole fresh, local, human quality and organic ingredients. WEST COAST CANINE LIFE® pre-mixes are blended locally, in a small family owned and operated facility on Vancouver Island, BC. We are very proud that we know where every ingredient comes from and how every ingredient is processed. Two independent laboratory analyses were conducted on the original Canine Life recipe, to ensure alignment with the National Research Council guidelines. The Pre-Mix and muffins do not contain meat meals, by-products, digest of by-products, fragments, preservatives of any kind, and further, corn, wheat, soy, and yeast are never found on a WEST COAST CANINE LIFE® ingredient list.

WEST COAST CANINE LIFE ® chooses only whole fresh organic grains to form part of our Pre-Mix.

We use certified organic whole brown rice, organic whole oats, and organic whole Jasmine Rice for their special qualities that help support dogs' health, longevity, and optimum cognitive and physical development and performance. Our carefully selected non-irradiated and organic herbs and spices include alfalfa, carob, Acadian sea kelp, ginger, marjoram, parsley, oregano, turmeric, shiitake mushroom powder, de-caffeinated green tea,  rosemary and garlic. For your dogs' safety, we use only pharmaceutical grade certified organic and Kosher DiCalcium Phosphate Dihydrate (Formula CaHPO42H20) as our calcium source, as lead has been found in some calcium products made from bone meal. This particular calcium is used in compounding pharmacies around the world. Laboratory assays are readily available for each batch of calcium used. It is this type of dedication to ingredients that sets Canine Life apart from other types of pre-mixes. The purity of all the ingredients we use in Canine Life is of paramount importance to us, and we are proud to say that in theory, every ingredient we use in our products could be eaten by all your family members. We are very proud that a WEST COAST CANINE LIFE® whole foods diet is also recommended by Spectrum Labs. Veterinarians throughout North America, as well as more than 30 counties around the world, depend on Spectrum Labs for allergy testing.

WEST COAST CANINE LIFE ® was developed over twenty five years ago, and is not only perfect for most dogs on a regular diet, but also helps to support dogs with special health needs, including cancer, kidney and liver dysfunction, skin sensitivities, allergies, epilepsy, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders, including pancreatitis, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease and gluten intolerance. Puppies thrive on our special Puppy Pre-Mix, which has been specifically developed for optimum nutrition during the first 6 months of life.

The development of West Coast Canine Life ® Pre-Mix is based on many years of research which includes the nutritional principles and practices of a number of well known and respected individuals, including Juliette de Bairacli Levy and Dr. Randy Kidd. Historic nutritional texts and kennel journals were also studied, as well as work done with Chinese medical doctors and herbalists. Juliette de Bairacli Levy was a world renowned herbalist, author and breeder, who will always be revered as the pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine for companion animals and stable animals. Randy Kidd, DVM, Ph.D., practiced traditional veterinary medicine for 15 years before he began incorporating homeopathy and herbal medicine into his practice. Dr. Kidd’s whole foods approach to herbal medicine makes wonderful common sense. He served as President of the American Holistic Veterinary Medicine Association and is an author and consultant to several pet supplement companies.

Sadly, one out of three dogs, whether pure breed or mixed breed, will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in their lives. That statistic mirrors our very own human one, right here in North America. West Coast Canine Life ® believes that diet plays a significant role in our pets’ health, and feeding a whole foods fresh cooked diet is one positive step we can take towards good health and longevity for our animal companions. We are proud to say that a percentage of the proceeds of all West Coast Canine Life ® products is donated to the University of Guelph’s Smiling Blue Skies ® Cancer Fund. www.smilingblueskies.com. To date, over $1,500.000.00 has been raised by the Smiling Blue Skies ® Cancer Fund.

TO 5 CUPS OF WEST COAST CANINE LIFE® PRE-MIX YOU WILL ADD:

Raw ground boneless meat: Meat is the most natural food for carnivores; it contains the most protein and is rich in many other nutrients. Choose only one protein per batch of muffins. For most dogs you can choose from a variety of meats (without bones), such as chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, game or fish. Amount of meat used, and the variety, may vary depending on your dog’s nutritional needs and or health concerns.

Raw minced green beans: An excellent source of calcium, protein, fibre, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, folic acid, and vitamins A and C. Other green vegetables can also be rotated.

Raw minced carrots: Contain beta-carotene, vitamin B complex, vitamins C, D, E and K, and irons, as well as calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sulphur, copper and iodine. Carrots are valuable as a digestive aid, glandular tonic, and as a skin cleanser and eye conditioner. Other yellow/orange vegetables can also be rotated.

Raw shredded red apple: contains potassium, phosphorus, chlorine, sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulphur, iron, fluorine, and silicon, plus many trace minerals. You may want to consider adding in a 1/2 cup of blueberries to each 5 cups of Pre-Mix.

Eggs: are an excellent source of fat, protein, amino acids, phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium, and vitamin A and D. Eggs help with the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Organic free range is always best!

Sunflower/Safflower Oil or Extra Virgin olive oil: are excellent sources of monounsaturated fatty acids.

Pure Cranberry Juice: supports the urinary tract by blocking bacteria adhesion to the bladder wall, which helps to prevent infection and allows the bacteria to be washed out with the urine. Cranberry juice must be PURE. Do not use sweetened juice such as Cranberry Cocktail. One batch of muffins or patties, using 5 cups of premix and your fresh ingredients, will make approximately 24 muffins or patties. (approx 85 g each).

Whole Grains We Choose and Why We Use Them in Our West Coast Canine Life Pre-Mixes

During the last few years, numerous new commercial “grain free” dog foods have been introduced to the market, including a variety of raw diets. Many owners, concerned about the grains used in their dog’s food, along with the amounts of grains used, have turned to grain free products, believing their dogs do not need grains. Over the last several years, I have personally been privy to an alarming number of new clients whose dogs are now being treated for liver and kidney disease, along with other disorders, including heart problems, gastrointestinal issues, a variety of different types of skin diseases, and sadly, cancer. From notes and information collected from my clients, many were feeding a diet very high in protein. Some of these diets included inferior grains and gluten, while others had no grains at all. Unfortunately, a number of these dogs came to us too late, and succumbed to their illnesses. The good news is, other dogs, in homes across North America, were introduced to our diet after their diagnosis, and are now living proof that nutrition plays a significant role in health and longevity. A whole foods balanced diet, tailored to meet individual needs, plays a very important role. Many of these owners are not only feeding a WHOLE foods diet, but they are also caring for the “whole dog," and this includes supportive veterinarians and health care practitioners who embrace the feeding of a whole foods diet, along with alternative methods that complement traditional veterinary care, for example, new vaccination protocols that recommend minimizing their use, whenever possible.Grains used in commercially made dog foods are often of inferior quality and not fit for human consumption. Grains most often chosen are corn, wheat, and soy. They are a cheap and economical source of protein. Further, vegetable concentrates, such as corn and rice glutens, are inexpensive sources of protein that may be added, to boost the protein percentages, in lieu of using more expensive meat proteins.Whole grains have powerful health benefits, including cancer-fighting potential, simply because they are WHOLE functional foods. A whole grain consists of three parts, its endosperm (starch), bran and germ. When a whole grain is refined, its bran and germ are removed. It is these refined inferior grains that are often found in commercial dog foods. The antioxidant content of different whole grains reinforces the message that a variety of grains should be included in your dog’s diet (and in ours too!). Research reported at the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) International Conference on Food, Nutrition and Cancer, by Ruiz Hai Liu, MD, Ph.D, and his colleagues at Cornell University, have demonstrated that whole grains, such as rice, contain many powerful phytonutrients. "Different plant foods have different phytochemicals," he said. "These substances go to different organs, tissues and cells, where they perform different functions. What your body needs to ward off disease is this synergistic effect - this teamwork - that is produced by eating a wide variety of plant foods, including whole grains." It is interesting to note that CoQ10 is also found in WHOLE GRAINS.
CoQ10 is used to protect the heart and other organs. Zinc, which happens to be found in whole grains, helps skin to heal. We always use organically grown whole grains in our products. In order for any crop to be labelled "organic," stringent testing of soils for contaminants, including arsenic, must be passed.

WHOLE ORGANIC BROWN RICE

Our brown rice comes from Lundberg Farms in California. The Lundberg family has been practicing eco-sustainable and organic farming since 1939. You are invited to read about their farming philosophy at www.lundbergfarms.com. Whole Brown Rice is high in fibre, vitamins and minerals, and it is gluten free. It contains potassium, protein, iron, thiamine, and niacin. Whole brown rice contains IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate), the very thing we buy in health food stores as a cancer supplement!!

Whole brown rice is not a commonly allergenic food and is not known to contain measurable amounts of goitrogens, oxalates, or purines. In fact, the hypoallergenic (low-allergy) nature of whole organic brown rice makes it a grain alternative commonly recommended by healthcare practitioners. Whole brown rice is an excellent source of the trace mineral manganese, and a good source of the minerals selenium and magnesium. It is grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Whole brown rice supplies complex carbohydrates for sustained energy, and B vitamins and beneficial fibre, to help maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal stools. Potassium, which helps to balance body fluids, and regulates acid/alkaline base, muscle and nerve impulses, is also found in whole brown rice.

WHOLE ORGANIC OATS are considered one of the world's healthiest foods. They are nutrient dense and provide sustained energy. Oats contain manganese, selenium, tryptophan, phosphorus, vitamin B1, dietary fibre, magnesium, and PROTEIN. They help to lower cholesterol levels, and are recommended for those with heart disease and diabetes. Oats, oat bran and oatmeal, contain a type of fibre called BETA-GLUCAN. Beta- glucan significantly enhances the human immune system's response to bacterial infections and it also stabilizes blood sugar levels. Oats contain an antioxidant and have a higher proportion of fat and protein than most other grains. Oats' high silicon content makes them beneficial to bones and connective tissues, and also supports the healing of wounds and skin disorders. They also soothe the digestive and nervous systems. Oats are a vital canine food. Their iron content helps to cleanse the intestines of impurities. Oats are a proven vital food for stud dogs and brood bitches. The famous collie dogs of Scotland and other hill regions of Great Britain have always been reared on oatmeal porridge.

WHOLE ORGANIC THAI JASMINE RICE

A small amount of Jasmine rice is added to our Pre-Mix as it is high in insoluble fiber which aids in digestion, complex carbohydrates which provide energy and keep a dog feeling full longer and vitamins and minerals that have a number of different benefits. Jasmine rice is also a fat-free food. Jasmine white rice is known to help sooth and heal an irritated gut when gastrointestinal issues are present.

Herbs and Spices We Choose and Why We Use Them

Alfalfa is a source of chlorophyll, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium. It is a natural anti-inflammatory. Alfalfa is also considered a tonic, kidney cleanser, and alkalinizer of the whole system, and contains 8 digestive enzymes.
Carob is rich in natural sugars and contains all the principle minerals and vitamins such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, silicon, magnesium, vitamins B1 and B2, niacin, some vitamin A and protein. The large carbohydrates act as a thickener to absorb water, thus helping to eliminate diarrhea, while the tannins bind to toxins helping to inactivate them. Best of all, dogs really love the taste of carob!
Acadian Sea Kelp provides iodine to the body for correct functioning of the thyroid gland, which influences overall health, metabolism, skin and coat. Kelp may also contribute to good pigmentation. Kelp contains some protein, is rich in iodine, calcium, sulphur, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, sodium and potassium, as well as vitamins A, B, E and D. Kelp also contains mannitol, a gentle purgative and bile stimulant, small amounts of lecithin, a phosphorus compound thought to be of great importance in the knitting of broken bones, especially in the older dog, and some carotene, a precursor to vitamin A production.
Ginger is the premium anti-nausea herb, and is well tolerated by dogs of all ages.

It acts as a digestive tonic and relieves stomach and intestinal gas. Ginger stimulates digestive juices and helps to expel worms. It's also great in helping to treat our own colds and sore throats.
Marjoram is a great herb for circulation, muscles, and joints that has a fortifying and warming effect. Marjoram helps the respiratory system, the genito-urinary system, supports the immune system, and helps the nervous system. Marjoram also helps the digestive system, by reducing constipation and flatulence, and helps to expel poisons from the body.
Parsley is rich in iron and vitamin C, and contains provitamin A. It also contains calcium, phosphorus, and manganese. Parsley is known as one of our most concentrated food sources.
Oregano contains carvacrol and thymol, which gives it fungicidal and anti-parasitic properties. It also helps to settle flatulence, and it stimulates the flow of bile. It is a strong antiseptic herb.

Cinnamon was first used medicinally in Egypt and parts of Europe as far back as 500 BC. It is reported to help with digestive problems, including nausea and diarrhea.
Turmeric has been proven to have liver-protective qualities. In addition to its liver-helping effects, turmeric also has anti-cancer properties, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-microbial characteristics, cardiovascular system benefits and intestinal benefits (decreases gas formation).

Decaffeinated Green Tea

contains high levels of substances called polyphenols (catechins) known to possess strong anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, and even antibiotic properties.  Studies suggest that regular consumption of green tea can reduce the incidence of a variety of cancers.

Shitake Mushroom powder contains lentinan, which stimulates the immune system and helps the body mount a defense against cancer, viruses, and fungal infections.

Rosemary is an excellent remedy for flatulence and other digestive disorders, including those that are secondary to general nervousness, excitability, or irritability. Rosemary is considered to be a calming agent, and a heart tonic. Rosemary acts as a natural barrier against food borne bacteria, and it also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Rosemary acts as a natural preservative.

Garlic has antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, and research tell us that it is safe to add to a dog’s diet in small quantities. It is an immune enhancer and contains

Vitamin A, iodine, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium.
